Immigration Amnesty

Immigration Amnesty is one of the most controversial issues on the political agenda of the United States since the nation’s early history. By 2008, studies showed that illegal immigrants outnumbered legal immigrants with the estimated number of 11.9 million undocumented persons living in the country. The country had experienced a great wave of illegal immigrants since 1920’s until the 21st century. However then, George W. Bush on his second term made a comprehensive immigration reform for the benefit of illegal immigrants. In 2007, the bipartisan bill was defeated due to lack of required votes in Congress.

On his first year, President Obama stressed that the Immigration reform would be on top of his list. However, due to last year’s economic downturn and the strained legislative fight over healthcare, the immigration issue has been set aside.

Senators Charles E. Schumer of New York who is a Democrat and Lindsey Graham, a Republican from South Carolina unveiled the initial outline of the proposed law last March 2010. The reform would require all illegal immigrants to admit they have broke the law before they could gain legal status and they should have a biometric identity card that shows they have legibility to work. President Obama expressed support for the bill saying “it should be the basis for moving forward.”

In no less than a month, Arizona Governor Jan Brewer signed a law which is completely the opposite of the proposed law of Schumer and Graham. This state law aims to identify, prosecute and deport illegal immigrants. The Arizona immigration bill gives the police the authority to demand immigration papers from anyone who is suspected of being an illegal resident— a move which the opposition said would obviously be an open invitation for discrimination and harassment against Hispanics in spite of their a possible legal citizenship. This move by Governor Brewer was also supported by Republican Senator John McCain.

The immigration reform has no doubt national consequences. Many politicians stay on the safe side. They choose to take no action as they know this will spur ethnic groups in the country. The issue even turned more complicated when Senator Graham backed away from supporting the Amnesty legislation.

I think the immigration amnesty would be the best option…also thinking about the current economy and the number of illegals..lets say the illegal immigrants are 2million ..charge them like 5000$ for being here illegally and looking at their status i dont think anyone of them should have a problem in paying that ..also will help boost the government funds by a lot of money

alot of people say, “american jobs are for americans” well averybody knows its not like that because alot of american people think they are too good for many jobs that are avalable they would rather be lazy and collect free state money. where on the other hand it would help the economy to help the undicumented people become legal because they will be able to pay taxes.

I think an amnesty would benefit our country but it won’t solve the immigration issues. I currently know of many teens and adults in their mid 20 that were brought to the country because their parents wanted to give them a better life. They broke the law unwillingly because they had to follow their parents and now as adults they are suffering the consequences of a crime they were forced to commit. They see the US as their home not Mexico, India, or whatever place their parents immigrated from. They are like any other US citizen that is born here the only difference was that they were brought here at a very young age. Now when it comes to the benefits of the US I think that the amnesty would benefit the economy dramatically. All illegals will be forced to start paying taxes on top of the forms and fees that they will need to pay to becomes residents. This will also benefit the job market because employers that are currently hiring illegal will have to provide better benefits because now the illegal’s will have a voice and not be afraid to use it. This could help the current unemployment since the job market will improve since immigrates won’t have to settle for lower wage jobs. Those jobs will then have to increase their wages and benefits which will allow for others to apply.

Amnesty is a horrible idea. It didn’t work the first time, all it did was encourage more people to come here illegally and break the law. If you’re not an american citizen, you don’t have the rights to American benefits. Do things the right way according to law and the American People would welcome you with open arms…come here illegally and we need to put you in jail or send you back to where you came. If you’re here illegally and have a baby, the baby should NOT be considered an American Citizen… Illegals are bankrupting this country and watering down the values that made this country great.

Kudos to the people of the great state of Arizona for having the courage to stand up and say ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!!…come to our state illegally and we will treat you like the criminals you are. How dare these people come here illegally and then have the arrogance to march in the streets and demand to have equal rights. SHAME ON YOU!!! This country is successful because we have a compassionate, generous, population who obey the LAW and uphold our great constitution.
