The burning desire of many legal and illegal immigrants to achieve a more sustainable and comprehensive immigration bill that will answer most of their demands have found a little inch of hope with the introduction of a new bill Representative Luis V. Gutierrez (D-I11) this week. The bill is entitled “Comprehensive Immigration Reform for America’s Security and Prosperity Act of 2009” or CIR ASAP.
CIR ASAP contains regulations that will reduce the waiting times many immigrant petitioners go through when petitioning an immediate relative. It also aims to provide a legalization path for illegal immigrants by way of paying a fine of $500, passing a criminal background check and learning English and civics. This will enable an illegal immigrant to get a chance to be legalized while residing in the US.
The comprehensive immigration reform has been a strong contender to be discussed by President Barack Obama in his first year as an elected president. This has been included in his agenda during his campaign which garnered him a huge support amongst US immigrants. Many believe that the introduction of such new bill by Rep. Gutierrez, with more than 80 co-sponsors, will stir up another session of long debates in the house and in the senate. As to a successful result of this effort, people will have to wait and see for now.
